Ringkasan:
The Israelites had seen God keep His word and use His power to deliver them. He had brought them out of slavery in Egypt, led them to Mount Sinai and, through Moses, was giving them His holy commandments that reflects His characters, teaching them how to live as His redeemed people.
As the Israelites saw the Lord save them from the Egyptians, as they experienced His guiding presence and as they remembered all He had done for them, they were learning that He is the only true God, that nothing and no one is like Him, and that He alone deserves to be worshiped. It is no wonder, then, that in the very first commandment, God plainly told His people not to have other gods. All the nearby nations worshiped a variety of false gods and idols. They bowed down to man-made statues that could be seen and touched but were powerless.
Christian are prone to idolatry too. Idolatry could mean excessive or extreme craving for pleasures of life or material goods that divert our attention and heart away from God. Like Israel, we make things, people, comfort and pleasure, so much more important than God. But God, who is merciful and forgiving, continually works in the lives of His people, giving us the Holy Spirit, bringing us to repentance and teaching us how to honor Him above everything else.
If we are already in Christ, what can we do to worship and honor God in our lives?
• Love God by obeying His commandments (driven by love, not compulsion).
• Pursue love, righteousness, godliness, faithfulness, gentleness, and many more written in the bible because those are God’s characters that He wants His people to have.
• Pray and confess that we are sinners, prone to idolatry, and let the Holy Spirit continually transform our heart, mind, and soul.
